frequently asked questions

We often get asked the same questions by our awesome candidates and job seekers. So, we thought we’d document these frequently asked questions to help you too!

We understand that deciding what to wear to your next job interview can be daunting. What you wear absolutely impacts the first impression your potential employer has of you.

Often, the advice for women is to wear a classic skirt, dress, or pants with a jacket, while for men it’s a suit and tie. However, the interview outfit you’d wear for a corporate finance role differs from what you might wear for a media role.

Check out the company’s social media channels and see if there are posts on there of employees to get to know the company and culture - and check out what they are wearing.

Remember, job interviews can be competitive. Your wardrobe helps your interviewer form their first impression of you. The right outfit can also help you feel more confident when the interview questions begin.

In our experience, here are a few little tips to help you look professional…
• Match your belt and shoes
• Don’t wear uncomfortable clothing or shoes that you are not comfortable in
• If taking documents to the interview, make sure they fit in a nice folder or fit into your bag
• Turn your phone to silent
• Always wear your best smile!

We recommend treating your dress code in the same manner as above. A mistake we’ve seen is that candidates do not take the interview as seriously as face-to-face. Wearing a smart top with scruffy shorts is fine until you need to stand up!

Unexpected distractions, such as children or pets walking into the room, will be excused by the interviewer, but smart clothing helps toward a good first impression.

Don’t forget to choose an appropriate background or ensure your surroundings are tidy before your interview begins. For an in-depth guide about what to do and how to prepare for a remote job interview, follow these tips.

Yes! Check out the company that is interviewing you. Visit their website, and understand their products and services. Also, check out the company’s social media channels to get an idea of its culture.

Review the job description and prepare your answers – be ready to give examples of what you’ve worked on. We highly recommend understanding the STAR method as an interview technique. It gives you a straightforward format you can use to tell a story by laying out the Situation, Task, Action, and Result.

Situation: Set the scene and give the necessary details of your example.
Task: Describe what your responsibility was in that situation.
Action: Explain exactly what steps you took to address it.
Result: Share what outcomes your actions achieved.

At the end of your interview, very often the interviewer will ask the interviewee if they have any questions. This is your opportunity to ask for feedback.

Your recruitment consultant will also ask the interviewer for feedback about your interview and will discuss this with you as soon as they can after the interview.

If you cannot attend a job interview, it is important to inform us as soon as possible. We will then contact the interviewer to explain the situation and provide an alternative time for the interview.

If it is not possible to reschedule the interview, you can ask if the interviewer is open to conducting the interview via phone or video call instead. It is important to be honest and transparent about the reason for not being able to attend the interview and to apologise to the interviewer for any convenience caused.

We get asked this a lot by overseas candidates. None of the clients we work for or the roles we fill for them offer Employer Sponsorship Visas. You must have full rights to work in Australia to be able to apply for the roles we are recruiting for. This means you need to be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a valid visa with permission to work.

Evidence of your right to work can be provided by identity documents such as a visa, an Australian or New Zealand passport, an Australian birth certificate, an Australian citizenship certificate, or confirmation of your permanent resident status.

Most foreign nationals will require a visa to live and work in Australia. There are many visas available, each one with a different purpose, different conditions, and different eligibility criteria. The visa that you require is highly dependent on your personal circumstances, and you should make sure that you apply for the correct and most suitable one for your needs.

Before applying for any visa, do your research. Explore visa options here.
